Magnetic Testing
Magnetic Testing involves magnetizing a component and then applying ferromagnetic particles. These particles align with surface or near-surface discontinuities, making defects visible. This method is commonly used to inspect welds, castings, and forgings for surface and subsurface defects, but it is limited to ferromagnetic materials only.

What are the responsibilities of an individual who is certified to Magnetic Level 2?
A professional certified to Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) Level 2 has proven their capability to perform Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) in compliance with established UT procedures. Within the scope of competence outlined on their certification, Level 2 personnel may be authorized by their employer to:
- Select the appropriate Magnetic Testing technique for the test method to be used.
- Define the limitations and application boundaries of the testing method.
- Interpret NDT codes, standards, specifications, and procedures into practical NDT instructions tailored to the specific working conditions.
- Set up and verify the correct equipment settings.
- Perform and oversee testing procedure.
- Interpret and evaluate test results based on applicable standards, codes, specifications, or procedures.
- Prepare detailed written instructions for Magnetic Testing.
- Carry out and supervise all tasks within or below Level 2 certification.
- Provide guidance and support to personnel at or below Level 2 certification.
- Document and report the results of Magnetic Testing.
